Endangered Species
The Endangered Species Act (ESA) was passed in 1973 with the purpose to conserve “the ecosystems upon which endangered and threatened species depend” and to conserve and recover listed species. The law is administered by the Interior Department’s U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Commerce Department’s National Marine Fisheries Service. The ESA is regarded as one of the most comprehensive wildlife conservation laws in the world.
